INSCRIBED COPY OF THE SECOND ISSUE: "For Doc Bolini / with beatific regards / Lampanyctus Steinbecki." "Doc" Rolf Bolin was an ichthyologist at Hopkins Marine Station and friend of Steinbeck and Ed Ricketts. In 1939 he named a species of lanternfish for his friend John Steinbeck, "Lampanyctus steinbecki." In a widely circulated story, Bolin named the fish after Steinbeck gave him a copy of Cup of Gold. Soon after, however, Steinbeck inexplicably asked for the book back, and Bolin spent a lifetime trying to re-synthesize the species so Steinbeck's name could be removed. Goldstone & Payne A1b.

Front joint split, light rubbing to head and tail of spine jacket, small repair to verso of head of spine jacket, light shelfwear.
