10, 1857-S MS-64 (PCGS). Gorgeous fully lustrous medium yellow gold with satiny surfaces. Immaculate fields with claims to a higher grade. A coin as new as its day of mintage among an issue of only 26,000 pieces. It is the finer of only two Mint State specimens graded by PCGS by four full points. Prior to the recovery of the S.S. Central America treasure not a single Mint State 1857-S eagle was known to numismatists! Such gold specialists as Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., and Harry W. Bass, Jr.-and all other legendary numismatists-never had the opportunity to acquire such a coin. This 1857-S is an extraordinary coin among a treasure cache full of extraordinary specimens, minted mere months or even days before the ship's demise and as remarkably fresh as when her journey began. A specimen of this San Francisco eagle rarity without parallel. What a fantastic coin this would be to add to an exhibit already containing a specimen of the much more available 1857-S double eagle.
