Charles W. Bartlett (1860-1940) Khyber Pass Arts and Crafts Woodblock Print, c. 1916, signed in red crayon in the margin l.l., stamped "CWB," unframed, ht. 11 7/8, wd. 8 7/8 in. Note: Bartlett was one of the most important artists working in Hawai'i during the first half of the 20th century. Born in England in 1860, Bartlett entered the Royal Academy of Arts in London in 1883. After three years of study, he entered the Académie Julian in Paris. From 1913-15, he traveled to Asia with his wife, visiting India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, China and Japan which greatly influenced his work. Stopping in Hawaii on the return voyage, he and his wife stayed and established residence and a studio there.
