Note: The whaleship Midas of New Bedford played a key role in the Whaling Disaster of 1871, in which, during an arctic whaling expedition, ice floes trapped the northernmost ships in a 40-ship whaling fleet. The seven ships which moved south most quickly to avoid the coming ice, including the Midas, had to dump their hauls to make room for the extra men.
