An ebonized wood cane with gold-plated knob (testing as 14k) engraved Presented to / Winslow Bisbee / Postmaster / Brantley / Florida / 1893, marked on side of handle 2 [unidentified hallmark] 49, metal ferrule; lg. 36.25 in. Bisbee received this cane as Postmaster of Brantley, Florida. A post office operated in Brantley, on the southern end of Merritt Island from 1887-1912. Brantley was named for an early pineapple planter and the area was known for its pineapple production. At present, areas that were Brantley and other local citrus communities are now part of the an unincorporated municipality at Merritt Island in Brevard County. Cowan's is grateful to Ben DiBiase at the Florida Historical Society for his research regarding the history of Brantley. Condition: Some abrasions to top of cane. Wear to shaft consistent with age and use.
