Title: 1819 First newspapers at African colony for freed slaves - The Royal Gazette; and Sierra Leone Advertiser Author: ** Place: Freetown [Sierra Leone, West Africa] Publisher: Date: 1819 Description: “Printed by W.H. Hagger, Printer to His Excellency the Governor”. Eight issues of Vol. 1, all from 1819, the first year of publication: Nos. 46 (Feb.20), 47 (Feb. 27), 49 (Mar. 13), 50 (Mar.20; missing portion of first and second pages); 52 (Apr. 3), 57 (July 3), 63 (Aug. 14) and 65 (Aug. 28). 7x12", 4pp. each, total of 32 pages. Though a British colony, Sierra Leone was originally founded by African-Americans who had escaped enslavement in the United States by seeking refuge with the British Army during the American Revolution. In addition to the white British officers in Freetown who administered the colony, there was also a contingent of some 30 white civilians who had come to Africa with anti-slavery missionary zeal. Articles in these papers include detailed accounts of court trials, for offenses great (“the murder of a liberated Negro”) and small (“stealing a cow with circumstances of great aggravation”); shipping arrivals (“Ship Speculator of Nassau…with 87 revolted Negroes and Barbadians”); trivia about canoe and pony races, rowing and wrestling matches at the local Fair; and more weighty accounts of efforts to suppress the illegal slave trade and the “superstitious cruelty” of natives who still believed in witchcraft. These early African colonial imprints are rare, produced by hand composition of foundry types on manually-operated machines. Lot Amendments Condition: Yellowing and foxing; very good. Item number: 235632
