Untranslated, but, written to the “Chief Engineer of the Domains of France”, apparently concerns a book he had just published on physical geography. The son of a slave-trader of Irish descent, Grandpre himself engaged in the African slave trade after service as a Captain in the French Royal Navy, when he traveled through India, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Mauritius and Yemen, describing his adventures - and the condemning the “cruelties” of slavery) in two memoirs published in France in 1801.
