Cadillac's reputation as America's finest luxury brand is unchallenged today. Around the world, the brand is synonymous with luxury and American style. Cadillac's own roots go back to 1903, with a modest but reliable run of single-cylinder cars. These tough little cars sold very well and established Cadillac as one of America's most reliable and best selling cars. This single-cylinder model was used by Cadillac longer than by many of its competitors; by the time a four-cylinder car was introduced, the company had fallen behind. A competitive four-cylinder model was needed to regain Cadillac's standing in the market. Customers demanded larger, more powerful and more refined automobiles. Cadillac delivered with the Model 30. This 30 hp model had the power and flexibility that the customer demanded and a price that positioned it well in the market. The Model 30 proved a good seller but needed to continue its advancement to maintain its edge. For 1912, Cadillac introduced a system that has been part of most cars ever since – the industry's first electric self-starter. With the help of genius designer Charles Kettering, Cadillac gained a huge advantage over its competition. No longer was the inconvenience of priming and cranking the engine required; instead, electricity would power the new machine to life. Cadillac's four-cylinder line continued to gain momentum and Cadillac did not rest on their laurels. They continued to enlarge the capacity of the four. The beautiful motor with its polished copper water jackets was enlarged from 30hp to 50hp for 1913. For the pinnacle year of 1914, the 50hp four was given a clever electrically engaged two-speed rear end to further boost performance. This car is a fine example from the ultimate year of the Cadillac four: it is equipped with the stock 50hp engine with the well-perfected electric self-starter. As it is a 14, this model also has the very desirable two-speed rear end. This feature makes high speed motoring quiet and less stressful on the motor. The car is nicely restored in Brewster green over fine black leather upholstery and is striped in gold lining. The engine is nicely presented, with its polished copper water jackets and individually cast cylinder jugs. The dash features a speedometer, oil gauge, air pressure gauge, air pump, and ignition/light switch panel. A good and correct "two man" top protects the occupants from the weather. The restoration is older but the car remains on nice order. Four-cylinder Cadillacs have always been popular tour cars in brass era circles and the 14 has the most desirable combination of features. The largest engine combined with the two-speed rear end and wide comfortable body provides an excellent long distance touring machine. The car's continued popularity ensures ease in finding replacement parts and the knowledge to keep this Cadillac running in top order. Cadillacs from 1914 have a large stance and ride on big 27" wheels with 34x4-½" tires. The car has an impressive look of a large touring car, embodying the size and performance of some of the elite cars of the period at a fraction of the price. Considered by many to be the best value of the brass era, these 14 Cadillacs rarely come to market, and this car can be considered an excellent opportunity.
