1924 VAUXHALL 14/40 TYPE LM TOURER Registration No. DS 8141 Chassis No. LM 4419 Engine No. LM 4418 Cream and brown with beige leather interior Engine: four cylinder, overhead valves, 2,300 cc; Gearbox: four speed sliding mesh; Brakes: four-wheel mechanical; Suspension: front and rear cable brakes, semi-elliptic leaf-springs. Right hand drive. Vauxhall Motors, marine engineers, made a swift progression into motorcar manufacturing, and by 1904 their American styled cars had sold 75 units in a twelve month period. They quickly earned a reputation for quality and reliability, and even during the Great War the Vauxhall D Type cars were produced at a rate of eight per week for use by the fighting services. Although the 30/98 probably set the bench mark for Vauxhall excellence, the 14/40 2.3 litre M Type introduced in 1922 offered good flexibility at a slightly lower price. The M-Type was followed by the 14/40 LM model in 1925, which boasted 4 wheel brakes, a 4 speed gearbox and a slightly longer wheelbase, which improved the appearance of its luxurious coachwork. This particular vehicle is a lovely example of an LM 14/40 open 4 seat tourer, and having been fully restored to a high standard a few years ago it remains in good condition throughout. It is fitted with its correct lamps and instrumentation, and has a full set of weather equipment, including sidescreens. Originally supplied by T.B. Adair of Johannesburg, it spent the early part of its life in South Africa, where the model was very popular, before returning to England to be an active mobile exhibit in the Stratford Motor Museum until 1990.
