Ariel's design department was blessed with a surfeit of talent as the Selly Oak firm aproached the 1930s, Chief Designer Val Page having under his wing both Edward Turner and Bert Hopwood. It was Page though, who had laid down the basics of Ariel's four-stroke single range in 1926, moved the magneto behind the engine for '27 and thus established the form in which the engine would survive for the next 30 years. The two largest models offered as the 1920s drew to a close were a pair of similar 557cc sidevalve machines intended for sidecar duties: Models A and B, the latter being the de luxe version. Manufactured on 28th May 1927, this rare Model B retains its original registration, frame and engine numbers and has - we are advised - always been attached to its alloy-panelled single seater sports sidecar. The combination was fully restored around ten years ago at considerable expense, the private vendor describing it as in good condition with excellent mechanics, while reporting that the sidecar needs finishing in detail. The motorcycle is finished in black, while the sidecar interior is trimmed in green. This rare and highly original vintage combination is offered with restoration invoices and Swansea V5.
