“The Rolls Royce of Motorcycles” was how these fine machines were deemed. Made in Nottingham, virtually to special order, the Brough was indeed superior in performance, finish and design. Brough selected the finest components from only the best manufacturers: JA Prestwich engines, Sturmey Archer gear boxes, Castle forks, all made to Brough specification. The result was a machine that glistened, handled flawlessly, and would "see off” almost anything on the road. This machine has been built around a JAP engine that has been converted to Hemming overhead valve configuration. The firm of J Hemming and Sons, Liverpool, offered side to overhead valve conversion kits for JAP engines. In 1927 they announced that this service could be extended to vee-twins for the sum of £12 (quite a value when one considers the extent of the upgrade), the conversion being illustrated in Jeff Clew’s book 'The End Of An Era'. The rebuild began by fitting re-cast JAP crankcases with the original Hemming OHV conversion, then adding engine internals consisting of contemporary racing Morgan parts. The gearbox casing was milled from a solid billet, proper Sturmey heavyweight gears installed, and an original cover fitted. Period Harley forks make-up the front end. The carburetor is an Amal of the era, and the magneto is Lucas. The frame was fabricated from lugs, cast to original pattern, and obtained through the Brough Superior spares scheme. Wheels were professionally built around Enfield hubs, Royal Enfield being the supplier of choice to the Brough works. The remainder of the machine has been reproduced to exacting Brough Superior standards, including nickel plated bright work; the result being a handsome, very useable machine that has been ridden many miles, and is a pleasure to operate. An excellent opportunity to acquire a true thoroughbred, at a fraction of the price of a period piece.
