1937 BENTLEY 4¼-LITRE TWO DOOR PILLARLESS COUPE COACHWORK BY JAMES YOUNG Registration No. EYP 490 Chassis No. B111 LE Engine No. H 4 BG Right hand drive. Prior to the takeover of Bentley Motors by Rolls-Royce, the Derby factory had plans for a more sporting character model. The name Bentley and what it stood for was the ideal platform to launch such a car and the all new 3½-litre Bentley was introduced in 1933. The Derby Bentleys soon earned an enviable reputation and with the development of European highways, a more powerful model was introduced in 1936 of 4¼-litre capacity. As with its Rolls-Royce counterpart, the Bentley attracted the very best of the coachbuilders art and this very special 1938 James Young two door pillarless coupe is such an example. First owned by a Major Bell of Shipley, Horsham who sold it in 1945, it then passed through three subsequent owners prior to being exported in 1966 to Vancouver, Canada where it remained until 1990. During the latter years the car underwent a major restoration and has since only covered about 1000 miles. This particular car appears in Johnnie Greens 'Fifty Years Of The Marque' on page 198 and as far as records indicate is one of only two built, the other example being mentioned in 'The Silent Sports Car'. The car is in excellent condition and drives supurbly, with its elegant pillarless steamlined side window design it provides a most attractive and sporting pre-war Bentley. The sumptuous red leather interior is as new and provides a striking contrast to the two tone green external livery. The present owner has only used the vehicle occassionally, but kept it fully maintained. This therefore is an opportunity to acquire an almost one-off coachbuilt pre-war 4¼-litre Bentley that will provide fast and reliable motoring in the true Silent Sports Car Bentley fashion. It comes with its original old style log book and V5 document.
