Despite a name that sounds archetypically British, Standard were a high-end German manufacturer at Stuttgart. With a racing background they had, at one time, employed Hermann Lang - of Mercedes fame - as a rider. The 350/500cc ohc single cylinder Rex was produced during the latter part of the 1930s, and bristled with unusual features. The sloping cylinder, which was fed by horizontal slide Fischer Amal carburettor, sat atop a heavily ribbed crankcase attached to a 4-speed Hurth gearbox. Machines were fitted with Castle forks (made under licence from Brough Superior) and Standard's own rear suspension system. Quirkily so, gear levers and brake pedals were positioned on the British side! The rare 350cc Rex is missing its complete front end, together with the seat and exhaust system. It has been at the Museum since 1969, and is offered without documentation.
