One of the most charismatic model names in motorcycling history, ‘International’ was first used by Norton for its top-of-the-range sports roadster in 1932. The Inter’s Arthur Carroll-designed overhead-camshaft engine had been developed in the works racers for the preceding two years, and although it retained the classic 79x100mm bore/stroke dimensions and shaft-and-bevels cam drive of the existing CS1, was entirely new. Based on the works bikes and intended for racing, the International could nevertheless be ordered with refinements such as lights and a kickstart-equipped gearbox. By the time production halted in 1939 it was being built with a four-speed foot-change ’box and plunger rear suspension (the ‘Garden Gate’ frame), reappearing after the war in similar guise save for the adoption of the hydraulically-damped Roadholder front fork, which replaced the pre-war girder. This Norton International comes with correspondence from Norton Villiers Ltd to previous owner, James Campbell confirming that it was built to ‘Manx’ competition specification and specially prepared to ‘show finish’ for the cancelled 1939 Motor Cycle Show at Earls Court, a process that involved extra polishing and plating of components. First registered on 30th August 1947, the machine was originally fitted with engine number ‘9939’, subsequently with ‘9910’ and currently has ‘9126’. It is one of only a tiny handful (believed six) built to Manx specification for selected riders in 1939, although to whom it was first delivered is not recorded. The ‘Inter’ subsequently passed from James Campbell to one Peter Manester, from whom it was purchased in 1986 by the current owner. The latter commissioned a full restoration, including an engine rebuild by John Twibey, of Wolverhampton, and since completion in the early 1990s the machine has been kept in his dining room. Presented in excellent, restored condition, ‘JLB 452’ is offered with old-style continuation logbook (1968), expired MoT (1971-72) and Swansea V5 registration document.
