Rudge-Whitworth had a strong reputation as makers of fast and agile motorcycles and their most sporting model was the 'Ulster', named for Graham Walker's edging home in front of the then dominant Sunbeams in the '29 Ulster TT. The road version was a very sporting bike indeed and continued to be developed as Rudge themselves diminished during the 'thirties, even surviving the move from Coventry to Hayes in 1938. FXN 956 would have been registered in the second half of 1939, one of the last. The late owner, a great Rudge enthusiast, left the restoration uncompleted but with much work done. The frame, forks, mudguards and other ancillaries, including the gearbox, are rebuilt, painted and assembled and the assembly is complete with wheels and a stripped petrol tank. The matched crankcase assembly is in the frame and cylinder, engine internals, electrics and the important bronze head are present. Prospective buyers should inspect this rare and desirable Rudge carefully and satisfy themselves as to its condition and exact specification, since other parts may well be found before sale day. Last taxed in 1975, FXN 956 will be welcomed back by the Rudge fraternity. It has a V5 for its London number as well as an extensive file on the model's specification and rebuild progress.
