Amongst the warmed-over pre-war machines which most British makers offered in 1946 – 47, two designs stood out. One was the Vincent, the other the Sunbeam S7, bearing no resemblance at all to the older Sunbeams. Allegedly copied from a BMW design, BSA’s take on the German machine included the fattest wheels, on 16” rims, ever seen on a UK motorcycle and mudguards to suit. Sadly, the first machines were under-developed but the re-design produced a much better motorcycle, the S7 de luxe. This example, apparently using the similar S8 frame, was extensively rebuilt both mechanically and cosmetically, by Moto Znojmo in 1996, alongside the museum’s S8. Finished in this model’s characteristic Mist Green and in very good condition, the S7 should only need re-commissioning in order to take to the road again. The machine is offered with an Austrian registration document.
