Horex, from Bad Homburg was the German motorcycle that out-classed all of the others in the 1950s. Arguably the originators of the modern parallel twin in 1932, their advanced twins and singles of the post-war period were active and successful in competition with racers of advanced design and construction and versions of their touring machines outstanding in the ISDT. The basis for the Enduro bikes was the ‘Resident’ single of 1955. This was a unit-construction design of very clean appearance, the massive, finned castings being mounted in a purpose-made twin-loop frame with leading-link forks, the whole inspiring great loyalty amongst its riders. The museum’s Resident had been fully rebuilt before its acquisition, having covered a mere 400 km. before going on display. Described as ‘road-ready’ we would, nevertheless advise the usual safety checks before using this beautiful and rare German ‘single’.
