1968 MERCEDES-BENZ 600 PULLMAN LIMOUSINE Registration No. OBP 91E Chassis No. 306434491 Engine No. 943 Dark blue with beige leather interior. Engine: 90° V8, single overhead camshaft per bank, Bosch fuel injection, 4987cc (or 6332cc), 300bhp at 4,100rpm; Gearbox: four-speed automatic; Suspension: hydro-pneumatic self-levelling independent with anti-roll bars; Brakes: front and rear servo-assisted discs, twin calliper to front. Left hand drive. When the world's motoring press was allowed to examine and drive the long-awaited Mercedes-Benz 600 in 1963 it gave the great car a rapturous welcome, extolling ride, handling and unparalleled performance in the luxury field. With its modern unitary construction, sophisticated engineering and all-embracing levels of equipment, it outpaced any competitor. Superb in design and execution, this magnificent automobile still has the power to impress. The advanced 6.3 litre vee-eight was provided with fuel injection and overhead camshafts. Power flowed in abundance, enough to take this 2.5-ton car to close to 130mph. It was available as a four-door limousine, Pullman six-door limousine, or Pullman landaulette. Traditional though its comforts might be, in the 600 series its creators adopted the most modern unitary construction methods for the huge hull, incorporating the then new idea of 'crumple zones' at front and rear to protect the cabin and its occupants in a collision. Other technical features were as advanced. There was fully independent air suspension with adjustable damping and controllable ride height. The steering wheel was adjustable for both length and rake, there was central locking and separate air conditioning for front and rear compartments. Windows could be opened and seats adjusted by smooth, virtually silent hydraulic mechanisms. Even the rear boot lid was power assisted. This Mercedes-Benz 600 was evidently built or adapted to the requirements of a uniquely demanding purchaser. Built on the long wheelbase Pullman hull with all that implies in rear seat legroom, it has the four-door long wheelbase specification. Beneath both rear seats are to be found lockable safes; there is a television camera trained through the rear window with a monitor at the front. Discretion for the passengers is assured by the opaque black glazing. There is a compact disc player in the glove box, and the more customary 600 installation of a refrigerator in the boot. The sheer presence of the Pullman cannot fail to impress; this example features a host of extra equipment on a motor car noted for its refinement.
