Launched in 1976, the 400GT was notable as the first Ferrari to offer automatic transmission as an option. Maranello's flagship, the splendidly equipped 2+2 featured self-levelling rear suspension, power-assisted steering, electric windows and optional air conditioning. Its arrival re-affirmed Ferrari's determination to compete with the world's finest luxury saloons, though the car's biggest potential market - the United States - remained closed to it because of the latter's safety and emissions legislation. Even after its 4.8-litre V12 received fuel injection in 1979, the model - now the 400i - remained effectively a Europe-only car. A rare righthand-drive example, this automatic-transmission 400i was sold new in South Africa and imported into the UK in 1998. Since then the car has undergone extensive renovation, the engine top-end (both cylinder heads) being overhauled in 2002 and the body re-sprayed and interior refurbished that same year. In addition, the radiator has been replaced, a stainless-steel exhaust system fitted and many other items renewed or refurbished to bring the car to its present fine condition. Finished in green with black leather interior, 'KGB 988T' is described by the private vendor as in very good condition in every respect and comes with restoration invoices, road fund licence to August 2003, MoT to September 2003 and Swansea V5.
