Built using a 1986 Harley-Davidson 883cc Sportster as the basis, this motorcycle is closely modelled on Harley’s XR750 racer that has been the dominant machine on American half-mile ovals and TT tracks for over three decades, seeing off challenges from the likes of Triumph, Yamaha and Honda. A mainstay of American motorcycle sport for decades, flat track racing has only caught on in the UK relatively recently. There are now two series: the ACU National Short-track Championship and the Silkolene Short-track Championship, both of which cater for a variety of different types of machine ranging from moto-cross and enduro bikes to purpose-built flat-trackers. The machine offered here is one of a number built for the AMA’s Pro-Am flat track championship, a ‘one make’ series for Harley-Davidson Sportster-based racers, in which it competed in 1986 and 1987. Its specification includes a stainless-steel Supertrapp exhaust system, White Power shock absorbers, Uni swingarm, Screaming Eagle fork brace and steering damper, and a magnesium alloy front wheel. Presented in excellent condition, this stylish Harley Sportster represents an ideal means of participation in the 2009 short track season.
