THE FERRARI 328
Introduced in 1985, the Ferrari 328 GTB was similar to the preceding 308 GTB, apart from its 3.2-liter engine. By increasing both bore and stroke, the quattrovalvole engine's capacity was raised to 3,186cc which, together with a higher compression ratio, revised pistons, and an improved Marelli engine management system, lifted maximum power to 260bhp. Top speed was raised to within a whisker of 160mph (258km/h) with the sprint to 100km/h covered in a fraction over 5.5 seconds. On the outside, the elegant simplicity of Pininfarina's original 308 had been diluted somewhat by the addition of Testarossa-style molded bumpers incorporating both sidelights and indicators, deeper rear valance, and an unobtrusive roof spoiler. Its underlying beauty though could not be disguised. 'In our book, this is still the most beautiful of all contemporary exotics - a gorgeous looking car,' declared Motor magazine. The 328 GTB/GTS continued in production until 1989, by which time almost 22,000 308/328s of all types had been sold, making the model the most commercially successful Ferrari of all time.
THE MOTORCAR OFFERED
It is quite a rare car, with only 1,345 328GTB Berlinettas built during the four-year model run, versus 6,068 GTS Targas—and are even more rarely seen in the US.
Finished in the elegant silver over black color scheme, this 1989 production example has numerous cosmetic and mechanical improvements over the examples that proceeded it. A raft of updates were included from May of 1988 onward. A redesigned suspension and steering system were complemented by new convex wheels, and subtle interior, and exterior improvements. ABS brakes were introduced in 1989 — but were optional on non-US spec cars. This example is one of only 249 ABS-equipped 328s.
Delivered new to Japan, its early history is documented in a Japanese maintenance record book recording regular service and mileage. It is reported that the car was in a minor front-end collision that was subsequently repaired to a high standard. Imported to Holland in 2016, the Ferrari was subject to a 190-point Ferrari Approved inspection in which it scored high marks (copy of the inspection are on file). Some service records from the time also exist. Later registered in Belgium, the Ferrari was brought stateside over a year ago and has received some additional maintenance work since arriving.
Almost never seen when new, let alone today, this is a rare opportunity to acquire a hardtop Berlinetta example of the popular 328 from the best iteration of the model.
