Title: 19th Century Japanese Hanging Scroll of an Archer on Horseback Author: Place: Publisher: Date: 19th century Description: Hanging scroll, hand-painted on silk, mounted to floral backing. Painting measures 101x36.5 cm (39¾x14¼"). Entire scroll measures 176x46 cm (69¼x18"). Comes in its original wooden box with lid. A skillfully painted portrait of an archer on horseback, his bow and arrow are at ease, but both the archer and his horse look behind them. There's a cherry blossom tree in bloom on the right edge, and petals have fallen beneath the horse's feet. Archers hold a special place in Japanese military history, perhaps the most famous archer is the Samurai named Nasu no Yoichi (1169-1232). Provenance: Collection of the Late Doyce Nunis, Jr. Lot Amendments Condition: Some very faint surface soiling, and two tiny bits of surface wear at right edge, plus the red paint has smeared in a few tiny places; on the whole the painting is near fine, the backing has some soiling and is very good.
