Launched in 2008 as part of Harley-Davidson’s ‘Dark Custom’ line up, the Cross Bones is unashamedly ‘retro’ in conception, boasting a springer front fork and other post-war, bobber-era styling cues including a sprung solo saddle, half-round footboards, circular air filter housing and chopped front mudguard showing off the wide wheel and fat tyre. Powering the Cross Bones is the latest, fuel-injected version of Harley’s familiar pushrod v-twin engine, which in this application displaces a mighty 1,584cc. Torque is much more important than outright power in this class of motorcycle, and the Cross Bones does not disappoint with a maximum of 89ft/lbs at a mere 3,300rpm. With that kind of grunt the Cross Bones needs few gears but nevertheless there are six in the ’box, while final drive is by low-maintenance rubber belt. The Cross Bones is a member of the Softail family, so comes with a hardtail-style frame and hidden rear suspension, while other period features include a horseshoe-shaped oil tank, chromed oil feed lines, ape-hanger ’bars, bobtail rear mudguard and chromed, straight-cut exhausts with slash cut ends. Minimal superfluous decoration and a predominantly black finish contribute to that old school, custom look. In H-D’s own words: ‘Cross Bones melds stripped and chopped custom creativity with rough and raw finishes,’ so is just the job for those who crave 50-year-old style backed up by a full manufacturer’s warranty.
