THE PORSCHE 930 TURBO
Much of the Porsche 911's development had resulted from the factory's racing program, and it was the then FIA Group 4 homologation rules, which required 400 road cars to be built, spurred on the development of 'Project 930' - the legendary 911/930 Turbo. In production from April 1975, the Turbo married a KKK turbocharger to the 3.0-liter Carrera RSR engine, in road trim a combination that delivered 260bhp for a top speed of 155mph. But the Turbo wasn't just about top speed, it was also the best-equipped 911 and amazingly flexible - hence only four speeds in the gearbox - being capable of racing from a standstill to 100mph in 14 seconds.
What set the 930 Turbo apart from its peers was the relaxed way this stupefying performance was delivered. Comparing the Turbo to similarly quick 'he-man' cars such as the Holman & Moody-tuned Cobra 427 and the Ford GT40, Motor's Roger Bell reckoned what made the Porsche so different was that it "hurls you forward with similar velocity but in an uncannily quiet and effortless way. To be shoved so hard in the back that you need high-back seats to keep your head on, yet neither to feel nor hear anything more than a muffled hum, is a very odd sensation indeed in a car."
THE MOTORCAR OFFERED
This beautiful Porsche 930 is a Euro-spec example that was extensively modified by renowned Porsche tuner into the weapon it is today, it car was federalized and sold to a California-based enthusiast who owned the car since 1992.
In 1993, the owner commissioned Andial to perform an assortment of special upgrades that the car wears to this day. The engine was built to Andial's 3.5L stroker specification, including a new Andial crank, pulley, pistons, and cylinders. Carrera Camshafts were installed and the heads were machined and ported to 36mm with angle cut valve seats. The engine received all-new rocker shafts and arms, bearings, guides, head studs, and an upgraded oil pump while the build was being performed. Additionally, the engine was outfitted with a twin-plug distributor utilizing dual coils and CD units, an Andial Sport intercooler, and a k27/11 turbocharger to round out the package.
The gearbox was fully overhauled during the engine build and fitted with a custom gearset, an 8:39 ring and pinion, and all new thrust bearings and synchros. The suspension was outfitted with 22mm front and 30mm rear sway bars. Following the suspension change, the car was set to lower than European ride height and corner balanced. A RUF lower front valance was added to accommodate the oversized front oil cooler that was installed. The interior wears an Andial boost gauge in place of the clock, a VDO boost gauge, a VDO voltage gauge, a VDO cylinder head temperature gauge, and an Andial digital intercooler telemetry gauge. A VDO clock was added below the telemetry gauge to replace the factory unit. A roll cage that was previously fitted has been removed and the garnish rails and carpet have been replaced to eliminate the cuts in the interior to accommodate it.
Following the preparation performed by Andial, the car traveled only 32,000 miles over the past three decades. Rigorously maintained by All German Auto of San Diego California from 2000 to the present, detailed service records showing all work performed during these 20 years accompany the Porsche. Cosmetically the car is in lovely condition with stunning Grand Prix white paint that shows few blemishes. The wheels are in very nice condition and feature color-matched centers.
For those who find the raw power of the factory 930 to be not quite enough, this weapons-grade, Andial modified Porsche should provide ample opportunity to scare the pants off of yourself and your passengers.
