Davis (American, 1920-1985); After "Popsicle" for "Gene Davis Giveaway", 1969; Acyrlic on canvas (one of fifty examples); 68" x 67 1/2"; Screenprinted signature; Provenance: Douglas Davis Washington, D.C.; By descent to present owner Note: It was in 1969, after Nixon"s election, before Woodstock and the first walk on the moon, amid be-ins and happenings, that The Gene Davis Giveaway took place. Conceived as a celebration of the Color Field movement as well as a work of art itself, the Giveaway was the brainchild of three men: Gene Davis; artist Ed McGowin and Douglas Davis the art critic for the National Observer whom Gene David credited as "the principal conceiver of the event". Gene Davis initiated the process by sending an original six-foot-square work called "Popsicle" to Ed McGowin"s studio, along with the colors he"d mixed to paint it. There, a production line was set up to reproduce the work 50 times. When complete, the artist"s name was silk-screened on the back of each canva
