containing 30 fine portraits of regimental officers, most carrying swords, 25 of which are identified in ink on the mount. The album's owner is unknown, but the compilation appears to be exclusively a wartime association without civilian or family views. The nine-month 5th Massachusetts organized during the late summer of 1862 and was attached to the Department of North Carolina, later the 18th Corps conducting operations from New Berne until mustering out on July 2, 1863. The militiamen reorganized for 100 days emergency service during Early's advance on the Capitol in July 1864 so a number of the officers remained in service until November 1864. The Bay State men are from front to back: Capt. Benjamin F. Parker Co. B; 2nd Lt. John Harrington Co. B; 1st Lt. Walter Bailey Co. I; Capt. Joseph Crafts, Co. K; Capt. Charles Converse, Co. G (m/o 11/16/64); 2nd Lt. William A. Colgate, Co. G; 1st Lt. and Adjutant William T. Eustis; unidentified officer; 2nd Lt. Andrew J. Holbrook, Co.
