In the 1750s, there was an increasing advocacy of Greek art and architecture as superior to those of Rome. Della Magnificenza is Piranesi's defence of Roman and Etruscan architecture and ornament, in particular directed against J.D. Le Roy's work Les Ruines des plus beaux monuments de la Grèce of 1758.
