Beschreibung:

68 2888 Dickens Ch 1812 1870 68/2888 Dickens, Ch. (1812-1870). AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED "Charles Dickens", to "John [Thompson]", dated "Athenaeum Club Wednesday Fourteenth February 1849", pen and ink, 2 leaves, (3)p. - Lower blank third of second leaf replaced with matching modern laid paper. = Giving his servant John Thompson directions for finding the key of his envelope-case and asking him to make "that, and the bunch of keys I send with this to enable you to open the drawer, into a little parcel, and put it into the small pocket of the great coat which Topping is to bring down to me when he fetches me with the carriage, this afternoon". John Thompson was the man servant who was found to have stolen 8 guineas from Dickens' cash box, but whom Dickens could not dismiss outright because he knew about Dickens' mistress Ellen (Nelly) Ternan (he eventually provided him with a job in a small business). SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE XCI.
