"In so far, however, as the dictionary arose from the need for proper names to receive separate treatment, it is a development which has a parallel in the biblical side of Estienne's work, where the original interpretatio printed with his Latin Biblies (together with the indexes) was collected in 1537 into a stout octavo volume, Hebraea, chaldaea, graeca et latine nomina virorum etc. quae in Bibliis leguntur, which is virtually a dictionary; here, too, many of the same ancient geographers and historians are cited as in the dictionary of proper names (...) These examples show how Estienne's lexicographical work and his biblical research interacted, and how either or both might grow into a reference book of more than merely philological value, while keeping the rigorous order and linguistic accuracy of the dictionaries" (E.
