Schätzpreis: *R (2.400,- €) 19 Z., schwarzbraune Bastarda mit roten Hervorhebungen, recto 10 Zeilen Text mit 1 Zeilenfüller in Gold auf Hellblau u. Dunkelrot sowie 9 Leerzeilen, verso makabre Zierseite zum Beginn des Totenoffiziums: in einer Säulenhalle betet ein kostbar gewandetes Gerippe (aus den Schädelöffnungen windet sich eine Schlange) knieend vor einem aufgeschlagenen Buch auf einem Altar; im Hintergrund öffnet sich die Halle auf eine Landschaft mit Burg. Unter der Miniatur 4 Zeilen Text u. eine hübsche florale dreizeilige Initiale "D", das Ganze in einer schwarzgrundigen Bordüre mit zwei Gerippen (eins stehend, das andere auf einem offenen Grab sitzend), Rankenwerk, Blüten, Beeren, einer Sense u. einem Spaten. "Taken in their totality, the miniatures that mark the beginning of the Office of the Dead are the most iconographically varied of all those that appear in books of Hours. There are more different images for this text than for any other. These miniatures are also among the most fascinating, touching, as they do, on the late medieval fear of and obsession with death... Death personified as a living skeleton is the final category of themes used for the Office of the Dead. These images are among the most moving and horrifying produced in the Middle Ages and Renaissance... Some illuminators choose to represent but a single figure of Death in their miniatures for the Office of the Dead. The effect can be arresting" (R. S.
