A 1950s gem set clip brooch by Franco Cannilla for Masenza, the textured gold figure with a lattice basket above his head filled with cascading carved emerald leaves, cabochon rubies and sapphires and brilliant cut diamonds, signed Cannilla Masenza - Roma, 6.2cm long Franco Cannilla (1911-1984) was a sculptor from Sicily who was approached by Mario Masenza at the end of the 1940's to collaborate in creating artists jewels for Masenza's shop in the heart of Rome. The collaboration between Cannilla and Masenza continued until the late 1960s. Cannilla first exhibited his jewellery in Milan in 1949, and his work was featured at many other international jewellery exhibitions, including the International Exhibition of Jewellery in London in 1961.
