A 19th century mounted leather blackjack, the cover inset with a struck silver medal for the death of Oliver Cromwell 1658, of Dutch manufacture, his laureate bust left, rev. a young olive tree, sheep attended by shepherd nearby, 47mm (MI i 435/85) and engraved 'I intended not only to oblige My friends but Mine Enemies Also Exceeding even the desires of those that were factiously discontented if they did but pretend to any modest and sober scence' and 'As the sins of our peace disposed us to this Unhappy War so let this War prepare us for thy blessed Peace- Barrington', 22.5cm (8.75in) high The first quotation from 'Eikon Basilike' The arms for JOSEPH BARRINGTON (born 21 Feb 1764) who, with his five sons, founded the Barrington Hospital and Infirmary in Limerick. This was incorporated by Act of Parliament in 1831 and Joseph Barrington was created a baronet later that year. He died in 1846 and was succeeded by his son Matthew who was crown solicitor for Munster
