A 19th century Scottish large horn snuff mull, the mounts unmarked, the cover with an applied shield engraved with a crest and a motto 'Manu Forti', the hinge mount pierced and engraved with thistles and roses, the plain collar engraved 'To Angus McKay as a mark of respect from Wm. Hunter Glasgow 1838', the suspension loop with three chains hung with a fiddle pattern snuff spoon, an ivory tapper and a hare's paw, 17cm (6 3/4in) long There can be no doubt about the donor's intention, but neither Burke's General Armory nor Fairbairn's Book of Crests lists any crest and motto for McKay.
