A CHINESE BLACK-GROUND VASE DECORATED IN THE MANNER OF CORNELIS PRONK 18TH CENTURY The square-section body painted to each facet with a leafy branch of redcurrants, with a band of stylised foliage encircling the foot, 28.7cm. Cornelis Pronk (1691-1759) was a Dutch draughtsman and painter who was employed by the Dutch East India Company from 1734 until around 1740 to create designs for porcelain. A number of Pronk's designs, including the decoration on this vase, were drawn from botanical studies and prints by the Dutch-Swiss naturalist Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717). Cf.
