A Collection of letters from Lillian Gish to James FrasherA collection of handwritten letters from Lillian Gish to her longtime personal assistant and friend, James Frasher, various dates 1970s-1980s, including eight letters on airmail paper with corresponding envelopes, the majority of the letters written from the Hotel Elisabethpark Badgastein, Austria, mostly of a personal nature and dealing with household or medical matters, telling Frasher of her travels or extolling the health benefits of being in Austria, discussing thermal baths and a series of shots and medical procedures she had whilst there, recounting meetings with friends, with one letter telling Jim 'Have started writing on the most private thing known to man – religion. Some of it may be laughable but all believable in some parts of the world' [Gish started work on a proposed book about her religious faith in the 1970s but it was never published]; one letter discussing with Jim 'Am happy to hear B.B. looked good on TV. And Conn. Has bought Silent Years. I can't go to Colorado as much as I would like to...Please write and say so. Also he ought run his most beautiful film "Romola". I want a print so much.'; another letter discussing a potential book project 'About the film of our book...If you know of or find anyone who gives a good practical reason for buying it at so much money, yes. Otherwise without an interest in a paperback from some publisher, it would not be wise...Tony Oursler Who works for Reader's Digest and lives near Helen [Hayes] in Nyack is one I would call by phone...Took last thermal this morning, start new treatment tomorrow which confines me several days but will be up when Teddy Kennedy gets here next Friday...'; another letter tells Jim 'Am anxious to see the Chaplin film and it sounds hopeful about "Intolerance"...send me the lovely pictures of Helen Hayes and her good work.' Letters, majority: 10 x 6 in.FootnotesProvenance The Estate of James Frasher, Lillian Gish's Longtime Personal Assistant
