Serial no. 183402 for 1869, .44 caliber. Standard civilian model with 8 inch New York-marked barrel, blued and casehardened finish and varnished walnut grips. Together with period black leather Slim Jim Holster, the reverse crudely cut for belt attachment. Also included is an unmarked 2 1/2" silver five point star with scroll and border engraving, blued enamel lettering Deputy/Sheriff/Santa Clara Co. centering a blued enamel eye with red stone pupil above the motto Always Open. By repute the badge and gun belonged to a deputy sheriff named Paul Pelle, no provenance included. Condition: Gun: very good, showing patches of spotting overall; barrel retains perhaps 30% blue in protected areas; cylinder with traces of blue and generally strong cylinder scene; frame retains much darkened casehardening; grips with scattered marks, wear at butt and retaining 50-60% varnish. Holster showing scuffs, marks and partially open seam. Badge excellent with dark unpolished patina. see Illustration
