A COMMONWEALTH-PERIOD SET OF MINUTES FROM A MEETING OF THE COUNCIL OF STATE REGARDING THE CONDITION OF THE NAVY IN THE LEAD UP TO THE FIRST ANGLO-DUTCH WAR OF 1652 kept by Jo[hn] Thurloe, clerk to the Council, over a single folded sheet dated Saturday 26 t h of Febru r y 1652 and summarising four motions - relief at a successful encounter; to enquire of the navy's true state; to increase the navy's size and to advise 'the Generalls' what numbers of Ships will be neccessary to be at Sea this Summer.. ; together with A DECLARATION OF THE PARLIAMENT OF THE COMMONWEALTH OF ENGLAND concerning the state of diplomacy between England and the 'low Countries'; answers to questions about the fleet; a description of a recent engagement and details of a treaty, printed by John Field, 1652; together with two 19 t h-century souvenir copper medallions.
