A fascinating composite atlas with work by Kaerius's relatives [Atlas - Belgium - Netherlands] KAERIUS, Petrus Germania inferior id est, XVII Provinciarum eius novae et exactae Tabulae Geographicae, cum luculentis singularum descriptionibus additis a Petro Montano. Amsterdam, P. Kaerius, Folio: [6 incl. engr. title]-94-[pp.; maps (79Gg. Typus Frisiae orientalis (bound after Groningen, sm. piece cut out of title, remargined, dampstained esp. in left part, browned, ink notes, some moulding verso pl. Utrecht, sm. marg. tear and other sm. defects). Contemp. mottled calf, gilt decorated spine with raised bands (sl. used with scratches and rubbing). Mod. slipcase. Second and final Latin edition (1st of Pieter van der Keere's atlas exclusively devoted to Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. With a finely engraved title representing the impact of the invention of printing and navigation on the atlas production, a history plate with local customs and maps with decorative cartouches including small town views and plans of Zipa, Beemstra, Antwerp etc. For this second ed. the text by Petrus Montanus (1560-was entirely reset; "Flandriae pars orientalior" (pl. was replaced by the "Caerte van 't Vrije" (after p. by C.J. Visscher while the map "Typus Frisiae orientalis" is bound at the end. This atlas contains the famous Leo Belgicus map (2nd state), showing the lion rampant facing right by Hendrik van Langren (1573-1609), which Kaerius already inserted in the edition. Enriched with maps: "Belgium" by A. Goos (1631), Brabant (9 pl.), Flanders (8 pl.), Geldern (2 pl.), Limburg (2 pl.), Friesland (2 pl.), Luxembourg, Groningen, Artois, Hainaut, Zeeland, Mechelen, Zutphen, Namur, Utrecht, Overijsel, County of Holland by G. Blaeu, Heirs of C. Danckerts, Heirs of H. Hondius, J. Janssonius, M.F. van Langren, C.J. Visscher, J.B. Vrints, etc. one engr. by Dirck Gryp (!), and a 2nd Leo Belgicus by C.J. Visscher, in fact a rare intermediate (between 2nd and 3rd) state, dated of the first map of the Netherlands to emphasize the separation of the northern and southern parts of the country (1st st.: J. van Doetecum, 1598).
