Beschreibung:

A FINE IVORY NETSUKE OF A MAN TRYING TO TRAP A TANUKI Katalognummer: NE1118-087 Ivory netsuke Japan early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) The ivory bears a very good colour and fine patina. The man is trying to trap a small badger or tanuki under his straw hat but is unsuccessful as the small creature is behind him crawling up on his back. Both the tanuki and man have joyful expressions, the tanuki because he has escaped his captor and the man because of the joy he takes in his work. The cloak of the man is rather unusual and has been executed in great detail, with a fine cross-etched pattern and long flowing edges. Likely the man is a commissioned tanuki catcher, as they have been known to be quite a nuisance. Good irregular himotoshi on the underside of the hat. HEIGHT c. 3 CM Condition: Very good condition Provenance: Collection of Sam Felton with CITES permit no. 18US59513C/9 Literature: Hokei is listed in ‘Netsuke & Inro Artists and how to read their signatures’ by George Lazarnick, 1981, page 482. The netsuke (not illustrated) is that of a sneezer (self tickler). Schätzpreis 估價: € 1.000 Startpreis 起拍價: € 500 -
