A fine Regency brass mounted ebonised table clock Grant, London, circa 1805 The five pillar twin fusee bell striking movement with anchor escapement regulated by half-seconds period lenticular bob pendulum with silk suspension incorporating rise/fall F/S regulation square to the apex of the shallow-arched backplate inscribed GRANT, Fleet Street, London, No. 216 to lower margin, the 6.5 inch circular slightly convex white enamel Roman numeral dial with repeat signature GRANT, Fleet Street, LONDON, No. 216 to centre and Arabic five minutes to outer track, with steel spade hands set behind hinged cast brass convex glazed bezel, the ebonised arched case with lobed brass ball finial to the concave-sided upstand over fine concave-topped symmetrical foliate scroll engraved and pierced brass rectangular sound fret beneath dial, the sides applied with fine carved outswept scrolls with moulded caps and terminating with laurel rosettes, the rear with arched door incorporating circular convex glazed movement aperture, on cavetto moulded breakfronted skirt base with generous brass border to lower margin and ball feet, 42cm (16.5ins) high excluding the later brass finial; 46cm (18ins) high overall. John Grant is recorded in Baillie, G.H. Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World as gaining his freedom of the Clockmaker's Company in 1781, he later served as Warden and died in 1810. He was a fine maker who was nephew and successor to the famous clock and watchmaker Alexander Cumming. His son, John junior, was born in 1796, became Liveryman of the Clockmaker's Company in 1817 and is believed to have worked until 1840. The case of the current lot is of a design often used by John Grant, a comparable example is illustrated in Barder, Richard C. R. The Georgian Bracket Clock, 1714-1830 on page 190 (Plate VI/17).
