A FINE VICTORIAN PLASTER BUST OF A MAIDEN BY BRUCCIANI, LONDON SECOND HALF 19TH CENTURY, AFTER AN ITALIAN 15TH CENTURY SOURCE Possibly representing Saint Cecilia, portrayed with the head turned slightly to sinister, and the hair tied in a central knot above the forehead, truncated below the draped shoulders, on an integral rectangular socle with inscription D. BRUCCIANI & CO LONDON and inventory number 2347, with paper label for the same number 57cm high, 47cm wide Catalogue note: Born near Lucca, Italy, plaster figure maker Domenico Brucciani came to England with his father. He established a Gallery of Casts in Covent Garden and was soon known as the leading plaster figure maker and modeller in London. He worked for the South Kensington Museum (now the Victoria and Albert Museum), the British Museum and the National Portrait Gallery, taking casts of items in their collections and of monuments elsewhere. A similar Brucciani cast of this bust, which was formerly attributed to Donatello and is thought to represent Saint Cecilia, is in the cast collection of the Royal Academy of Arts, London, object number 03/1497
