A FLEMISH MYTHOLOGICAL TAPESTRY OF PYGMALION LATE 17TH CENTURY, POSSIBLY ANTWERP Probably after a design by Daniel Janssens (1636-1682) depicting Ovid's story of Pygmalion in the act of sculpting Galatea, spiral twist columns and buildings to his right, fragment from a larger example approximately 223.5cm high, 258cm wide Provenance: West Hanney House, Oxfordshire For a complete example of this tapestry, attributed to the Wauters workshop, Flanders, Antwerp please see the tapestry held in the Art Institute Chicago, the gift of Mrs. Arthur Cutten, Reference Number 1953.303. Condition Report: With wear, marks, knocks and scratches as per age, handling, use, and cleaning. As per cataloguing-a section from a larger example- upper left hand corner is a dropped in section from the larger piece and replaces section visible in the Chicago example with drawn chariot. The whole with areas of stitch repairs- but with fragility resulting in further loss, loose threading and small open areas with backing visible. Areas of weakness and loss, Fading and discolouration Not completely level across the lower edge. Tapestry is later lined and with associated thin border- Some horizontal splits in areas which need consolidation. Horizontal fold(?) mark is visible running from left edge- across tops of character legs- this has gone more profound stitch repairs General wear and may benefit from remedial conservation prior to installation in domestic setting.
