A GEORGE II OIL-GILT AND JAPANESE LACQUER PIER TABLE
ATTRIBUTED TO BENJAMIN GOODISON CIRCA 1730, THE JAPANESE LACQUER 17TH CENTURY
The top inset with a rectangular Japanese black lacquer panel decorated with a central gold-toned handled bowl of flowers within a paneled nashiji border, surrounded by a giltwood molding with re-entrant corners, on a stepped frieze with carved leaves and fluted molding, above a central scrolled shell with pendant, supported on the tails of entwined dolphins on an egg-and-dart and Vitruvian scroll carved plinth, with an indecipherable fragmentary printed label, another manuscript label inscribed Studley – Staircase, one inscribed EH/3, an additional label to the back of the plinth inscribed from loft, and with printed and inscribed Ann and Gordon Getty Collection inventory label

Almost certainly supplied to John Aislabie for Studley Royal, Yorkshire and thence by descent at Studley Royal and Fountains Hall to Commander Clare Vyner, Studley Royal, Ripon, Yorkshire; sold Christie's, London, 21 April 1966, lot 31.
