Beschreibung:

A George III ivory veneered and tortoiseshell strung tea caddy, circa 1775, of decagonal section, the hinged cover with metal swing handle above an inset oval metal panel; the front, back and sides all with tortoiseshell strung angles and white metal strung borders, the front with inset oval metal escutcheon inscribed 'G', beneath the keyhole, the interior with traces of metal lining, 10.5cm high overall, 11cm wide; together with nine photograph cards of Queen Mary, signed, inscribed and dated for various years between 1933 to 1947, within a giltwood frame, glazed, the card backing with strut support, 15cm high, 10cm wide Provenance: By direct descent from one of Queen Mary's ladies in waiting who was gifted the caddy by the Queen, and over a period of years between 1933 and 1947 the various signed and inscribed photographic cards of Queen Mary. As queen consort from 1910, Queen Mary supported her husband King George V through the First World War. After George's death in 1936, her eldest son Edward became king-emperor, but to her dismay he abdicated the same year in order to marry twice-divorced American socialite Wallis Simpson. She supported her second son Albert who succeeded to the throne as George VI, until his death in 1952. She died the following year, at the beginning of the reign of her granddaughter, Elizabeth II.
