A GEORGE III SILVER EPERGNE MARK OF CHARLES FREDERICK KANDLER, LONDON, 1767 Shaped oval, on four openwork leaf-capped scroll feet, with flower, leaf and berry garland apron, the stem pierced with slats, the detachable bowl pierced and chased with foliate scrolls and lattice, with an openwork shell and gadrooned border, engraved twice with a coat-of-arms, with eight detachable foliate scroll branches, four suspending a basket with overhead handle, two oval and two circular, and four supporting a circular dish, each engraved with a crest below a motto, fully marked 16¾ in. (42.5 cm.) high 210 oz. (6,875 gr.) The arms are those of Hennessey of Ballymacmoy, co. Cork, possibly for James Hennessey of Ballymacmoy and his wife Catherine Barrett (d.1770), daughter of Sir William Barrett of Castlemore Barrett, co. Cork, whom he married in 1758. However, it is interesting to note the error in the motto beneath the arms. The word 'Motto' itself is included suggesting either an illiterate or foreign engraver. Therefore the arms could be for Richard Hennessey (1720-1800), who married his cousin Ellen, widow of James Hennessey of Brussels, in 1763. He left for Cognac in France in 1765 where he founded the company which stills bears his name.
