WILLIAM BARCLAY MASTERSON WAS BORN IN 1853. BAT BECAME ONE OF THE WILD WEST'S MOST LOVED AND FAMOUS GUNFIGHTER-TURNED-LAWMAN OF THE ERA. IN HIS EARLY YEARS HE MADE HIS NAME AS A SUCCESSFUL BUFFALO HUNTER, SCOUT, AND INDIAN PURSUER. DURING HIS VIBRANT CAREER HE HELD HIS GROUND AGAINST 500 KIOWA, COMMANCHE, CHEYENNE, AND SOUTHERN APACHE WARRIORS AT THE NOTORIOUS BATTLE OF ADOBE WALLS. IN 1876, BAT WAS EMPLOYED AS A SCOUT FOR THE U.S. ARMY UNDER THE COMMAND OF COLONEL NELSON MILES IN A FULL SCALE CAMPAIGN AGAINST THE SAME AMERICAN INDIAN NATIONS. IN 1877, BAT SETTLED IN DODGE CITY AND WAS ELECTED SHERIFF DURING THE HEIGHT OF THE CITY'S GAMBLING, PROSTITUTION, AND GENERAL DISORDER. BAT RELOCATED IN SEVERAL COLORADO BOOMTOWNS INCLUDING TRINIDAD WHERE HE WAS ELECTED AS TOWN MARSHALL; LEADVILLE WHERE HE WAS RECOGNIZED AS A SUCCESFUL GAMBLER; AND IN DENVER WHERE HE SUPPORTED HIMSELF IN THE THEN REPUTABLE OCCUPATION OF GAMBLER AND SALOON MANAGER. BY 1902, MASTERSON WAS A NATIONAL CELEBRITY. HOWEVER, HE DECIDED TO HANG UP HIS GUNS FOR GOOD. WHEN HE WAS OFFERED THE POSITION OF U.S. MARSHALL FOR OKLAHOMA TERRITORY BY PRESIDENT THEODORE ROOSEVELT IN 1905, HE RESPONDED IN A LETTER, "I AM NOT THE MAN FOR THE JOB," HE WROTE, "OKLAHOMA IS STILL WILD AND WOOLLY, AND IF I WERE MARSHALL SOME YOUNGSTER WOULD TRY TO PUT ME OUT BECAUSE OF MY REPUTATION. I WOULD BE BAIT FOR GROWN-UP KIDS WHO HAD FED ON DIME STORE NOVELS. I WOULD HAVE TO KILL OR BE KILLED. NO SENSE TO THAT. I HAVE TAKEN MY GUNS OFF, AND I DON'T EVER WANT TO PUT THEM ON AGAIN." WITH THAT SAGACIOUS DESISION, MASTERSON BEGAN HIS LONG AND SUCCESSFUL CAREER AS A SPORTSWRITER AND PROMOTER OF PRIZE FIGHTING IN NEW YORK CITY.
