The 18th annual Golden Globe Awards® ceremony was held on March 16, 1961 at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles. Along with this win, Spartacus received 5 Golden Globe Award® nominations. In hiring blacklisted writer Dalton Trumbo to pen the screenplay, producers Edward Lewis and Kirk Douglas (who also played the title role) were instrumental in ending the Hollywood blacklist. Based on the 1951 novel by Howard Fast, the epic film centered on a rebellious slave who becomes a gladiator and eventually leads a revolt against the Romans. Footage initially deemed too risqué for the screen (featuring co-stars Laurence Olivier and Tony Curtis was later restored to the 1991 version of the film.
