A Great War Cavalry D.C.M. group of five awarded to Farrier Staff Sergeant J. Cahill, 11th Hussars Distinguished Conduct Medal, G.V.R. (46041 Far.S.Sjt., 11/Hrs.); 1914 Mons Star (No.5237 Shoeing Smith. Cpl., 11-Hussars) the style of naming would indicate that this is probably a late or replacement issue; British War and Victory Medals (5237 S.Sjt., 11-Hrs); Army L.S. & G.C., G.V.R. (534936 W.O.Cl.11., D.C.M. 11-Hrs.) contact marks, nearly very fine or better (5) Footnote D.C.M. London Gazette 1 January, 1919; details 3 September, 1919. “His work both in action and behind the line was at all times of the highest order. He has been in every action in which the regiment has taken part and has invariably performed his duties with the greatest efficiency. Notably near Hamel during March, and east of Amiens in August 1918. He showed great coolness, gallantry and utter disregard of personal danger when attending to and evacuating wounded horses and his extreme keenness and devotion to duty were most marked.” Eleven D.C.M.’s to the regiment for the Great War.
