The film All About Eve (1950) was adapted by Mankiewicz from a 1946 Cosmopolitan magazine article entitled "The Wisdom of Eve" by Mary Orr. It was based on a true story about a woman named Martina Laurence ("Eve") who idolized and ultimately began to usurp the career and life of an actress named Elizabeth Bergner ("Margo Channing"). In these documents, art and reality meet. In Martina Laurence's letter to Joseph Mankiewicz, written 37 years after All About Eve was released, she is still distressed about how she is portrayed in the film. She writes: "I couldn't have been that sly, scheming, vicious girl who has given a name to a type of person--Eve Harrington." Shortly after, she sends him a 33 pp manuscript of her personal story. Mankiewicz's comments are annotated throughout the documents on Post-it notes and in pen and pencil.
