First Edition. One of the most famous of all first hand-hand accounts of the first Afghan War, and the fatal retreat from Kabul to Jelalabad and Peshawar, when some 15,000 British soldiers, sepoys, wives, children, camp followers, and others were either killed or captured, with Surgeon William Brydon the lone British survivor save for a few women and children taken hostage, among which number was the intrepid Lady Sale. Condition: Cloth worn and bumped, sunned at edges and spine; front hinge cracked and detaching from spine strip, ink signature on top margin of title page, some gatherings coming loose, occasional foxing, small tears to folding map, tape repair on verso, no paper loss; very good.
